Adolescent and Family Counseling Program

The Adolescent and Family Counsellor at Auburn Youth Centre is available to assist young people aged 12 to 24 years and their families in dealing with challenges that they may face.

The counsellor at Auburn Youth Centre is available for individual counseling, family counseling, and group work.

What is a Counsellor?

We all experience problems in our lives. Talking out a problem sometimes helps, but at times it is difficult to talk to parents, friends or teachers about things that worry us.

A counsellor is someone that you can talk to in a different way, someone who will listen to you very carefully, and who will not judge you and tell you what to do. The counsellor is there to help young people and / or their families to work things out for themselves, to make their own decisions and choices and to help see things in a different way.

What can I talk about in counseling?

Anything that is concerning you. Young people and their families seek counseling for lots of different reasons. These may include:

  • Family crisis or change
  • Domestic violence
  • Relationship problems
  • School and work issues
  • Mental health issues

Who can come?

Young people may come alone, with their family, or someone they feel safe with.

Parents and carers of young people may come alone or with other family members.

Others who live or work with young people.

What can I expect in counseling?

  • Counselling at Auburn Youth Centre is confidential and free of charge.
  • Counselling is voluntary – you decide with the counsellor how often and for how long you wish to attend.
  • You decide what you want to talk about.
  • Your cultural, religious, political and personal beliefs will be respected.

What other services are available in the counseling program?

The Adolescent and Family Counsellor also conduct workshops in schools and community centres on topics that concern young people. Topics may include:

  • Conflict resolution
  • Anger management
  • Mentoring
  • Mental health

Here are some examples of group work in the past:
